What is Behavioural Safety?

Behavioural safety is best summarised as the application of human behavioural psychology principles to the world of safety - or in plain English, understanding why people don't always follow the rules!

Many behavioural safety programmes focus solely on the behaviour of front line staff and the human response to consequences as the driver of their behaviour. This is not sufficient and can propagate a blame culture.

Many behavioural safety programmes ignore the key ingredients of risk assessments, safe working procedures, safe equipment, site rules and training programmes. To be effective, these should be reviewed as part of a holistic approach.

Your behavioural safety programme should build on your key ingredients, facilitate top down and bottom up engagement and set an inspirational outcome goal for your long term safety performance.

What can we do for you?

We can tailor our support to build on your current safety maturity level, and equally importantly, we can agree a pragmatic approach that is relevant to your level of business risk and your aspirations. We can work with you to make sure your operation is legally compliant and utilise our behavioural safety experience to make sure your procedures are worth so much more than paper on the shelf.

Behavioural safety is usually the missing ingredient from most safety management systems.

Our behavioural safety approach will recognise human failures, understand the power of conscious and sub-conscious drivers, consider all external and social factors and use cognitive psychology to help you ensure that everyone returns home safe and well at the end of each day.
