Training can be defined simply as teaching a person a particular skill or type of behaviour. The real challenge, however, is not in training, but in how we achieve effective learning -  acquiring new or adapting existing skills, knowledge, values or behaviours.

Learning the right skills and behaviours is obviously essential for every person in every business, but to be successful in changing behaviours, we must keep safety training simple, practical and relevant to the target audience.

• Receiving training in traditional forms of reading, watching and listening is usually only about 20% effective in the retention of learning.

• Participating in discussions, exercises and demonstrations can increase the learning retention up to around 75%.

• Putting into practice by doing, showing and coaching others is the final element and is especially effective at embedding learning.
